In industrial applications, a trolley is the wheeled mechanism that moves the hoist along the bridge girder of a crane. Trolley travel is the travel of the trolley or the trolley hoist across the span of the crane runway. Productivity is maximized when a trolley moves smoothly across a bridge.

Trolleys Creating Divots on Overhead Crane Rails

A crane has a bridge axis and trolley axis. Driving trolleys or trolley hoists into the rail end stops results in divots near the end of travel. If an operator unknowingly keeps the motors moving after the trolley hits either end stop, the trolley wheels keep spinning under power and grind divots into the rail.

Eventually, the divots can become so severe that the trolley motors do not have enough torque to pull themselves out of the divots. This problem results in avoidable downtime and costly maintenance expenses.

If left unrepaired, the divots can result in crane accidents and loss of productivity. The rails will need to be welded and grounded to bring them back to the original condition.

Non-Contact Crane Trolley End Stop with Crane Sentry® Lite

Avoid damage to trolley rails using Laser-View Technologies’ Crane Sentry® Lite as a non-contact end stop. Crane Sentry® Lite’s collision detection system serves as a great tool to minimize wear and the related maintenance due to crane operators running the wheels into the end stops.

The role of a stop is to contribute to the overall safety of overhead cranes by limiting the travel of a trolley or crane bridge. Since the Crane Sentry® Lite is a measurement-based device, one end stop monitors as a min distance and the other monitors as a max distance. The result is no rail divots, less downtime, and reduced maintenance costs.

The heart of the system is a robust measuring device and is not treated as a proximity sensor – you read a live value and enter actual set points for slow/stop. Because the Crane Sentry® Lite is a tool based on real measurements, the measurement at one end of the travel is set as a minimum value and the other end is set as a maximum value. This is all done with just one laser and one controller!

Similar measurement devices are not flexible enough to use for this purpose and would require 2 complete systems – one for each end of the trolley. Crane Sentry® Lite is a very flexible device that can be run with just one system and one laser.

One laser can be used to detect both trolley end stops. One end is set as a minimum distance alarm and the other is set as a maximum distance alarm. A single laser system can measure both ends of a runway with one alarm as the min and the other as the max, as long as the range does not exceed at 98 ft.
