Facilities with overhead cranes are required to maintain safe operations of crane lifting equipment. Keeping the hoist of an overhead crane out of the region shared by high bay material racking can minimize the probability of a crane collision or an accident due to interference. One way of promoting these safe operating practices is to install systems that do not permit unsafe events to occur, such as No-Fly zones.

Crane and Hoist Material Handling Safety Concerns
Overhead cranes are often used on nearby material racks that handlebar stock. A common and very dangerous problem occurs when the hook accidentally snags a rack. This is a safety hazard because a crane could pull a rack down.
Operators in metals service centers need to move materials as efficiently as possible to deal with just-in-time cut top length orders of raw materials. By prohibiting movement around a racking zone at all times, unnecessary crane movements may be required to get to the final destination, which takes more time. Due to these limitations, Laser-View Technologies has been asked to provide an automatic override when the hook is raised to a safe height.
How Crane Sentry® Can Help Prevent Material Handling Crane Safety Hazards
Crane Sentry® Zone Manager provides systems that use long-range laser distance sensors in 2 axes capable of measuring up to 500 meters. This technology provides an absolute position that does not require mechanical positioning of limit switches or re-zeroing of encoders.
If a hoist is at a safe height so that the racking will not be snagged, the Zone Manager can be overridden by the hoist height good limit. As a result, operators do not need to take extra steps to go around the zone.
An automatic override when the hook is raised to a safe height can be accomplished by providing an upper limit switch output into the Crane Sentry® system or by monitoring the hoist height with a Crane Sentry® Lite collision monitoring package. The laser would be mounted to the underside of the hoist and aimed at an under hook carrier or a target plate over the load block.

Zone Manager is based on real measurements, not just proximity. Proximity devices do not permit the installer to fine-tune the perimeter of the zone after initial selection. Measurement-based systems are based on actual measurements and permit more flexible methods of control and configuration. For shorter crane runways, we can even measure on a natural surface without installing a special reflector.
