Engineers from within steel production, as well as across the industry, continue to increase their use of linear-position and displacement sensors for providing real-time information to live monitoring systems, such as remote or centralized programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and data collection systems (DCSs), which are taking over more control of linear-position/actuator-based systems. Many different types of sensors are available to measure displacement, position and proximity, so the application specifications and preference both play a role in making the decision on which sensor is right for the job. This presentation examines the advantages of laser-based position and displacement over conventional sensors.

Overhead bridge crane accidents and collisions are costly, reduce productivity, and can cause structural damage, derailing, and girder collapse resulting in shutdown, or worse, worker injuries. This presentation compares many of the most common overhead crane position and collision monitoring systems, their methods of operation, controllers, and environmental and target material strengths and weaknesses. The presentation features a discussion of many of the commonly available features of crane position and collision monitoring systems, including bridge-to-bridge and wall collision monitoring, skew monitoring, zone and multi-axis zone protection, and options for semi-automating travel to preset locations in an overhead crane bay.
